Not to be confused with registration, a Certificate of Title is the official negotiable document of ownership for motor vehicles. Often, the Certificate of Title and a Bill of Sale is required in the transfer of title process; however, under certain circumstances one or the other can be used. The Notary will also need to know the mileage of the vehicle as well.
The procedure for trailers is virtually the same as automobiles.
Effective 2009 for Boat Titles and 2011 for Outboard Motor Titles, Louisiana provides a title for boats and outboard motors. If the boat/motor is being transferred into Louisiana from another state and has a title from that state, then it must be titled in Louisiana. If it is a purchase from a private sale, a notarized bill of sale is required. If it does not have a title, no title is required, just registration. However, if it is to be financed, a title is required.
****Important: Titles issued as "Bonded Titles" cannot be transferred to Louisiana****
